  Een triac is als het ware een soort 220 Vac transistor die gestuurd kan worden met 5Vdc zwakstroom. Dit onderdeel werkt met netspanning en kan dus voor levensgevaarlijke situaties zorgen. Verder kan een kapotte triac uw schakeling volledig opblazen en bovendien netspanning veroorzaken op plaatsen waar u slechts een ongevaarlijke 5Vdc spanning verwacht. Daarom dient u een triac altijd vergezeld te laten gaan van een zogenaamde optocoupler. Bij een optocoupler is de ingang gelijk aan de uitgang, maar onderdeel zorgt voor een zogenaamde galvanische scheiding. Dit betekent dat er geen electrisch contact is tussen de ingang en de uitgang. Het signaal wordt doorgegeven via een lichtverbinding. Mocht nu de triac kapot gaan en netspanning afgeven, dan zal deze niet verder komen dan de optocoupler en zo uzelf en uw schakeling beschermen.
Als triac kunt bijvoorbeeld de TIC225S gebruiken. Als optocoupler kunt u bijvoorbeeld de K3023P of de MOC3023 gebruiken.
