The idea is to be able to drive a 500 Watt vehicle by using sunlight with a solar panel (wiki). We use an optimized car battery for storage and backup. A system including a solar panel and a battery for power also needs a controller. The controller keeps the load at 12Vdc (or at least battery voltage) but charges or adds as soon as the panels are generating energy. Our controller accepts a solar panel that delivers a maximum of 20 A by a maximum voltage of 45 Vdc. That equals about 900 Watt. In our situation we will never get that amount of power, even if we could convert all of our surface into 100% energy.
The Netherlands are situated in an area of the world where we may count with a received solar energy of 100 Watt to maybe a maximum of 150 Watt per 1 m² in total of all frequencies of received radiation. Imagine a solar panel as roofing for the Bolderbot. A curved roof of 1 m² seems suitable. It is obvious that this is not enough to propel our vehicle since the engines need about 500 Watt together. So what we are looking for is a type of solar panel with the highest yield per square meter.
- The wattage of any solar panel is measured using a uniform method. Although this way the power becomes comparable between solar panels, this is not the wattage you may expect to obtain from your solar panel in use.
- The power supplied by any solar panel decreases per year. For a 25 year life cycle calculate with an average of 80%.
- Dirt and dust do reduce the generated power, however that is on average not more then a 5% loss.
- Solar panels use MC4 connectors by default.
- Never connect or disconnect solar panels under load. Connectors will melt.
